Feminist Action for Biodiversity and Environmental Justice!

We are fast approaching the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) 16th Conference of Parties in Cali, Colombia from October 21 – Friday, November 1, 2024, the first of the three COPs from the Rio Conventions in the upcoming two-month period.

WEDO will be on the ground with a small but mighty delegation, prioritizing the critical interconnections between biodiversity and climate change while amplifying gender and environment data. In tandem, WEDO is excited to contribute to the regionalization process of the Women & Gender Constituency for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), intentionally providing a space for fierce feminists from across the region to shape their collective advocacy on the road to COP29 and eventually, COP30.

WEDO champions a holistic, integrated and gender-responsive approach to the planetary crisis. We advocate for political alignment, avoiding policy fragmentation and ensuring that gender considerations are embedded in all environmental governance frameworks. Our strategy for COP16 includes:

Strengthening connections with the UNFCCC and CCD;
Co-organizing the inaugural meeting of the LAC-WGC Taskforce;
Hosting a side event that bridges the critical areas of climate and biodiversity, integrating gender-disaggregated data to measure progress on biodiversity loss;
Celebrating the inaugural winners of the first Irene Dankelman "Young Ecofeminist Award"!

* Global Gender and Environment Data Conference: Advancing Gender Equality Through Strategic Data Insights

This conference is a direct response to the Call to Action that emerged from the UNFCCC COP 28 conference on the Global Conference for Gender and Environment Data.

* WGC LAC Feminist Gathering at CBD COP

The CBD COP16 moment provides us with a valuable chance to connect with feminists in the region, strategize and commit to shape the discussions and outcomes of COP30 as we build long-term, impactful collaborations within and beyond feminist networks. This event will launch the WGC-LAC Regionalization Process.
