Since its foundation in 1974, the Cultural Centre of Russia or the Gorky Sadan has led a unique cultural movement in eastern India for the last three decades, aimed at the promotion and popular understanding of mutually beneficial friendship between two countries. Its activities have extended beyond the usual foreign mission's cultural centre routine of library service and language classes to round-table discussions, seminars, study sessions, workshops, film sessions, popular lectures and open discussions devoted to particular thoughts, trends, movements and problems covering a wide range of subjects. The Gorky Sadan as it is popularly known, has played a significant role in this arena.
Gorky Sadan is now an abode and living embodiment of amity and understanding between peoples of diverse rich cultural heritage and hoary past. Gorky Sadan has played a vital role to develop people to people friendship between the two great nations. It is enormous activity that have made Gorky Sadan a popular name not only in Kolkata or the state of West Bengal, but also in India and Russia.
Today, we can proudly say that Gorky Sadan is a prominent symbol of friendship between the people Russia and the people of eastern India in particular and people of whole India in general, and it will remain as a strong pillar of Russia-India friendship forever, for many years to come.
