Bheenti Chitra
The remote village of Puhputra in Chhattisgarh is now renowned for a small group of artists who have developed a remarkable and unique sculptural tradition to adorn their surroundings. Developing from a post-harvest festival tradition of decorating newly white-washed and repaired houses, Bheenti Chitra added to the beauty of gond houses. The high compound walls were inked with godna or ancient tattoo designs. Walls transformed into story books in painted folk tales, quirky jalis (window lattices) shaped with clay dolls, monkeys and birds in 3D wall relief is commonly known as Bheenti Chitra
Artist Champabai Chitrakar from the tribal art museum Bhopal is a master of this craft working in the museum the since its inception.She has created wonderful jali compositions with 3D figurines adorning the walls of the museum. Her skills are a treat to eyes.
