The Mahatma Gandhi International School is an educational project that promotes holistic learning. The emphasis is on learning rather than teaching. The process of learning is experiential with real-life meaningful links. Children are active agents in the construction of their knowledge.
Through the academic years children participate actively in deciding on their projects which are mapped together with the faculty, integrating the diverse disciplines and skills. The various projects so far include film-making, journalism, cafeteria, and rock-band. This led the students to showcase their films, win accolades as musicians in national competitions and run a real cafeteria on campus.
The school provides equal opportunities and inclusive education and reaches out to the economically disadvantaged by providing partial and full scholarships all through their academic years.
Non-violence is the foundation of the school and this philosophy is translated into practice across the classes. Children learn, discover and invent diverse ways of conflict resolution. The curriculum includes Gandhian studies and about other non-violent practitioners from across the world. In a true democratic process that places the learner at the centre, the children hold council meetings and also provide valuable feedback to their peers and their own faculty. The faculty are called initiators and are an integral part of the learner group. Their role is to initiate the group into a joyful, meaningful and enriching process of learning.
The school aims to create compassionate world citizens concerned about others and their environment. Children are actively involved in community service and development projects that include teaching at local government schools, fund-raising for community development projects, cleaning places of tourist and archeological importance.
The alchemy of the learning process touches all in the MGIS community – children, initiators, parents and leads to a metamorphosis that transforms us from within, gives us courage and conviction, questions our assumptions, equips us with skills, provides us with tools to face our future, to shape it, to change it.
