The Safa Masjid also known as Shahouri Masjid is situated in Ponda Taluka. It is the biggest, oldest and most famous amongst all the mosques in Goa. It was built in 1560 by Ibrahim Adilshan of Bijapur.
The mosque and the tank were formerly surrounded by an extensive garden with many fountains. They were destroyed during the Portuguese rule.
A terracotta roof has been added recently to the Masjid. The prayer hall is constructed on a platform. Smooth Islamic arches abound here. The interior is simple though you get to see some arch in the typical Bijapuri fashion.
Adjacent to the Mosque is a well-constructed masonry tank with small chambers with 'meharab' designs.
The two major festivals Id-Ul-Fitr and Id-Ul-Zuha are celebrated at this mosque with great pomp and are attended by a large number of people.
