Gurgaon
Gurgaon Connection is a social community for expatriates who live or work in Gurgaon. With more than 800 households, we have news, clubs, committees, and social activities for just about everyone! The group offers a way for us to share information and build a network with friends nearby.
History
-------
Until just a few years ago, the foreigners in Gurgaon were few and far between. By the mid-2000s, there were enough of them to have an email distribution list and a monthly coffee meeting. The email distribution list was on one lady's personal computer, and if anyone wanted to send anything, they sent it to her, and she sent it to the group! They called themselves the "Gurgaonites".
By the late 2000s, the coffee meeting had become a weekly gathering, but the email distribution list got too long. Now the list-keeper had to send every message twice, each time to half the group, because her email account started to think she was a spammer! And then was born... Gurgaonite Connection!
More Than Just Emails
It started as a Yahoo! Group to allow foreigners living in Gurgaon to communicate with one another. That was in October 2007. In early 2008, one member asked the group if they'd come to a Gurgaon party if she had one for no reason. Four members planned it, and more than 100 Gurgaonites showed up at the first Gurgaonites' "bash"! By the end of 2008, the Gurgaonites had found an official home, a local favorite. The weekly coffees were now held there, and attendance boomed.
In February 2009, the group formally relaunched, calling itself "Gurgaon Connection" and introducing its new logo and web site: www.gurgaonconnection.com. Gurgaon Connection also introduced its loyalty program, where businesses around Gurgaon would offer discounts to members. It was all done by Gurgaonites. One designed the logo, one built the web site, one hosted the site, and many contributed input.
Where We Are Today
By the end of 2009, Gurgaon Connection was comprised of well over 500 families. The members are from Mexico and New Zealand, Japan and South Africa, and everywhere in between. The group now holds book clubs and melas, spa days and playgroups, parties and dinners. Gurgaon Connection has also taken on a volunteerism pledge.
