Situated 9 Kms from Panaji, The church and convent of St Francis of Assisi is one of the most important churches of Old Goa which makes it a place worth visiting. The church attracts people from far and near. Take a walk to the West of the Se Cathedral church, you will find an old Palace of the Archbishop which connects the Se Cathedral church to St Francis and the convent of Assisi.
This church was built for the Franciscan Friars who came to Goa in the early 16th century. The church houses the statues of St Francis which is made of wood and the statue of Our Lady of Miracles which is brought from Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The interior of the church portrays the Mosaic Corinthian style. The main features of this church are the illustrated scenes from Bible on the walls and some exquisite 17th century wall paintings. The altar of St Francis is beautifully decorated and portrays the Corinthian Baroque touch.
