The Surat Castle is located in the city of Surat in Gujarat, on the banks of the Tapti River. The castle is one of the oldest monuments in the city which is located about 280 km from the capital city of Gandhinagar. The Surat Castle is a major tourist attraction of the city because of the history associated with the monument.
Located on the west coast of India, Surat was once a prosperous port and suffered sieges from foreign countries like Portugal who wanted to take over the city. The castle was built to protect the city against such sieges. King Sultan Mahmood-III who was the king of Ahmedabad (1538-1554) was very much annoyed by these frequent destructions of Surat, ordered for building a very strong castle. The work was given to Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier who had been given the title of Khudawand Khan. This castle which was planned and built between 1540 and 1546 is built on about one acre of land right next to the Tapti River.
