Depending on your passport, some visa's are easier to get at the border. We are Canadians and drove with another South African couple to Kuwait through Khafji.
When you get to the border, you have to fill out the visa form, hand it to the officers and wait till your name is called. Our visa's were processed without much hassle (limited English spoken by the Kuwaiti border officials)
..but the South African couple were not so fortunate...the officials wanted to see their iqama! Thankfully , they had it with them ( last minute decision to carry it along!) - otherwise they would not have been allowed to cross the border.
so , yes, defintely carry all the paperwork you think is important

i know a group of people going there - they tell me the place is all booked up and the number of people expected to be at the Kumbh is going to be staggering!!!
Is it safe for foreigners to be in that sort of crowded , intense environment?

festival of temples - sounds exotic - we have been to the South of India several tiems ( most of the time just shopping in the Metros- once in a houseboat, which was amazing) , but never really visited the Temples and such......

HI Scor,
We went to the Beating the Retreat Rehearsal - which is held a day before , with all fanfare and full uniform ( only, no President presiding) ... this was on our last time in India, we were lucky enough to be in New Delhi......
What I remember is that about a month before - in December - the information started doing the rounds on emails and several groups in New Delhi were informed of where to get eh Tickets from.I imagine that will happen again this year.... I don't think that one can buy the tickets so far ahead of time.

We stayed at the Dusit Laguna on Bang Thao Beach last April.
The beach was beautiful.
We ate at the hotel restaurants almost every night, though.
have fun,

Hallo,
my name is Thomas Boehm.I am german and have a chinese girlfriend who is right now in China. She worked as a tour guide and freelance photographer for the last 6 years. We both run tours for german clients in Yunnan province and in Ladakh.Yunnan is the most diverse and culturel rich province in China.
Lonely Planet refers it as the one if you only have short time. She speakes good english, and ofcourse mandarin & contoneese. She loves children and knows many special local places that you would never get to see on a ordanary booked tour.
This might sound strange and unsure for you , but believe me you would have a lifetime experience on a private organized, custum made tour where you decide what to do and on what pace.
Here my and her website so you can get a idea.We also do tours in camper cars for chinese in Europe.
But always in very small groups and on a enjoyable speed.
Thomas.
Keep in mind that it can get crowed everywhere during chinese new year.
